‘Congo Jazz’ van Blue Flamingo met drie nieuwe muzikale reizen.

Voor zijn nieuwe CD heeft 78-toerenverzamelaar en DJ Ziya Ertekin alias “Blue Flamingo” drie nieuwe muzikale reizen samengesteld. Deze CD is wederom een handreiking naar diegenen voor wie het 78-toerentijdperk nog onontgonnen gebied is, zonder dat de doorgewinterde muziekgravers onder ons zich te kort gedaan hoeven te voelen. De eerste beperkte oplage zal met drie verschillende covers verschijnen; in oker geel, paars en groen. Het album wordt gepresenteerd in Jazzkelder C5 in Rotterdam op 5 maart.

Voor de eerste mix, die bestaat uit hot jazz jungle exotica uit de jaren ‘20 en ‘30 van de vorige eeuw, is Blue Flamingo behoorlijk diep het stof ingedoken. Zo is de eerste plaat van deze mix, I’m Mister African van Leon Rene’s Orchestra, bijvoorbeeld nooit officieel uitgebracht. Ziya heeft dit nummer op zijn CD kunnen zetten doordat hij stuitte op de masterpersing van deze plaat.

De tweede mix bestaat uit 78-toerenplaten uit voormalig Belgisch Congo waar, onder invloed van de Cubaanse son en rumba, één van Afrika’s eerste moderne populaire muziekstijlen ontstond.

“The foundation for modern Congolese music was laid in the 1930s, when the first 78 r.p.m. records, containing music from Latin America, reached the capitals of both Congos. These records were hugely popular with the young urban population, who were completely captivated by this music. Records had reached Central Africa before, but nowhere, not even in early jazz, was their ancestors’ legacy as clearly present as it was in the rhythms of Central and South America. It felt as if a part of Africa was returning home again. It was a homecoming that rooted deeply and fused rapidly with other Congolese traditions into something entirely authentic”

De invloed van gospelmuziek op het ontstaan van de soul muziek is al vaak en uitvoerig beschreven. Toch kennen maar relatief weinig mensen de man die de Afro-Amerikaanse religieuze muziek een ziel gaf en terloops de term Gospel muziek introduceerde: Thomas A. Dorsey. De laatste mix is opgebouwd rond een unieke Dorsey opname.

“In the last song of my gospel mix, you hear Thomas A. Dorsey himself singing his composition “Hide me in Thy Bosom.” This was a huge gospel hit for Sister Rosetta Tharpein 1937. This recording is one of the most extraordinary 78 r.p.m. records I have in my collection. It’s a demo recording from the thirties that was engraved one-on-one onto an acetate disc in the recording studio. It’s likely that this is the only copy in the world.”
